Know Your Customer identity check

Verify who your customer says they are

AuthNTick’s online KYC Check helps Australian businesses verify an individual’s identity and retain a clear evidence trail. It can combine supported identity document verification with biometric checks where selected, while keeping the scope distinct from AML screening.

01

Core identity details

Capture the individual’s name, date of birth and other details required for the agreed verification workflow, then compare them with the identity evidence supplied.

02

Identity document data

Check supported document details against an available authoritative verification source, including Australia’s Document Verification Service where applicable to the document and workflow.

03

Biometric identity matching

Where selected, use a selfie, facial comparison and liveness step to help confirm that the person completing the check matches the identity document.

04

Recorded consent

Capture the individual’s authority to verify their identity for the stated onboarding, access or screening purpose.

05

Verification outcome

Receive a clear result that separates verified evidence from a mismatch, an incomplete submission or an outcome that needs review.

06

Timestamped evidence record

Retain an auditable record of the checks completed and the time of the result, subject to the data handling and retention settings agreed for your workflow.

Verification workflow

How document and biometric verification works

01

Send the secure KYC request

Invite the individual to complete an online identity verification workflow for your stated business purpose.

02

Collect identity details and consent

The individual provides the required personal information, identity document details and consent to verification.

03

Check the document data

Supported document details are submitted to the relevant verification source. The outcome indicates whether the supplied data could be matched, not whether the document holder is suitable for your service.

04

Complete biometric checks when selected

The individual captures a selfie and completes any required liveness step so the facial image can be compared with the identity evidence in scope.

05

Review the recorded outcome

Your team receives a timestamped result that distinguishes a successful verification from a mismatch, incomplete check or result requiring review.

Where it fits

Typical KYC Check use cases

Use identity verification where your onboarding process needs clear evidence of who is completing the request.

01

Customer identity verification before opening an account or providing access

02

Identity assurance for online platforms, marketplaces and member services

03

Confirming a candidate, contractor or authorised user is the person named in their documents

04

Adding an auditable identity step to a broader customer onboarding workflow

05

Re-verifying identity when a material customer detail changes or a business process requires a fresh check

06

Routing exceptions to an internal review team instead of relying on an unrecorded document sighting

Scope and limitations

What the result does—and does not—establish

PEP and sanctions screening are not included in this identity-only KYC Check.

  • A KYC Check verifies identity; this product does not include PEP, sanctions or other AML screening.
  • Biometric face matching and liveness apply only when those steps are selected for the workflow.
  • Document types, verification sources and evidence fields depend on the workflow agreed for your organisation.
  • A verified identity does not establish that a person is suitable, low risk or compliant with every legal requirement.
  • An inconclusive result is not proof of fraud. Data-entry errors, document condition, capture quality and source availability may all require review.
  • Businesses subject to AML/CTF obligations must determine the customer due diligence and ongoing monitoring controls their risk and circumstances require.

Implementation guidance

Design a KYC workflow your team can interpret

01

Choose the KYC workflow that matches your purpose

KYC is often used as a broad label, but the exact evidence needed depends on why you are identifying the person. A well-scoped workflow collects only the information needed and makes the resulting assurance clear to the team relying on it.

  • Define the onboarding or verification purpose before requesting personal information from the individual.
  • Select the supported identity documents and decide whether biometric face matching and liveness are appropriate for the level of impersonation risk.
  • Tell the individual how their information will be used and retain the consent and result needed for your records.
  • Refer mismatches or incomplete evidence for review instead of treating every unsuccessful automated result as fraud.
02

Understand the result and evidence delivered

The result should let an authorised reviewer see which parts of the identity workflow were completed and whether any evidence requires follow-up. Before implementation, agree on what your team needs to retain and how each outcome will affect onboarding.

  • Use a timestamped status and check record to support a consistent decision trail rather than relying on screenshots or an informal visual inspection.
  • Distinguish document-data verification, biometric comparison and liveness because each answers a different identity question.
  • Define who can view personal information and results, how long evidence should be retained and when it should be deleted.
  • Record any manual review and the reason for the final onboarding decision separately from the automated verification output.
03

Plan the KYC implementation around your customers

The best identity workflow balances assurance, privacy and a practical candidate experience. AuthNTick can help scope the request, but your organisation remains responsible for choosing the checks and decision rules appropriate to its purpose.

  • Map the points in your onboarding journey where identity is first collected, rechecked or escalated for review.
  • Confirm which customer groups, identity documents and exception paths need to be supported before launch.
  • Decide when biometrics are proportionate and provide an alternative or review path for customers who cannot complete the standard capture flow.
  • Train reviewers to interpret match, mismatch, incomplete and referred outcomes without making decisions outside the evidence supplied.
04

KYC identity verification and AML screening are different

An identity check answers whether the supplied identity evidence can be verified. It does not, by itself, assess financial-crime risk or complete an AML/CTF customer due diligence process.

  • Compare the KYC + AML Check when your workflow also requires PEP and sanctions screening or a broader financial-crime risk review.
  • For organisations, use a KYB Check to verify the entity and identify relevant owners and controllers rather than relying on one person’s KYC result.
  • Apply additional review where customer type, geography, ownership, service or transaction risk calls for more evidence.
  • Keep ongoing monitoring and periodic review separate from the one-off identity verification result.

KYC Check questions, answered.

Does the KYC Check include an AML check?

No. This KYC Check is an identity verification product and does not include PEP or sanctions screening. Choose the KYC + AML Check when those screening steps are required.

Does every KYC check include a selfie and liveness test?

Not necessarily. Biometric facial comparison and liveness are included only where they are selected for the relevant workflow and are appropriate to the verification purpose.

Which identity documents can be checked?

Supported document types and verification sources depend on the workflow agreed for your organisation. AuthNTick can confirm the available options and evidence requirements when scoping your KYC check.

What does the KYC result show?

The result records the verification steps completed, their outcome and the time of the check. The exact fields and retained evidence depend on the configured workflow and your organisation’s data handling requirements.

Can a KYC result make my business AML compliant?

No single identity check automatically makes a business AML/CTF compliant. Regulated businesses must assess their own obligations and may also need customer risk assessment, PEP and sanctions screening, enhanced due diligence and ongoing monitoring.

What happens if identity details do not match?

The result should be reviewed to identify whether the cause is incorrect data, an unsupported or expired document, incomplete evidence or a potential identity concern. A mismatch should not automatically be treated as fraud.

Can AuthNTick help design our KYC workflow?

You can request a quote to discuss your customer types, onboarding purpose, identity evidence, biometric requirements and exception handling. Your organisation remains responsible for deciding which controls meet its legal and risk requirements.

Do businesses use KYC or KYB?

KYC verifies an individual. KYB verifies an organisation and the relevant owners or controllers behind it. A business onboarding process may need a KYB check for the entity plus KYC checks for associated individuals.
